| I would not recommend this book unless the areas of the brain are already known to the reader. It was well written and the history of the discoveries are well explained. I had trouble when, for example, the book would say a certain section of the brain was at one time thought to be the seat of all emotions. It would list various experiments that would take place. You ended up knowing the history, but not necessarily the location within the brain, or what the final verdict of that area of the brain actually turned out to be. I am sure with a little introductory background reading about the brain this book would have made more of an impact on me. I believe the author should have expended with a few more paragraphs to tie-in and explain the final result or today's best guess about that area of the brain.
I read this book doing research as a criminal defense lawyer. I found it fascinating and very helpful. thanks to editors. |

| This volume includes several excellent chapters, introducing the reader to a number of developing concepts in the world of psychiatric neuroscience. These topics are alternately discussed on a more general, easy-to-understand level, and in great technical detail - each with their own merits. The reference lists/information are also quite helpful for those wishing to pursue a topic further (for example, a thorough table of mouse knockout studies in which an anxiety-like phenotype was found). Another highlight is the excellent discussion of how the field of psychiatric genetics is coming of age. This book will prove interesting to both basic scientists and clinical psychiatrists, and even to laypersons with a particular interest in this field. |

| If you just look through the list of topics, you would appreciate how much material has been condensed into this small-sized volume. It is comprehensive in scope. Each topic is complemented by a beautifully designed color-plate--193 in all. It takes much hard work to work through the book. It is best used as an aid to many fuller texts or for review. I hope the material can be developed into a video series like The Universe Within: the Human Genome, or a 3-D CD-rom. Then it will be such a blessing to all students of neuroanatomy and neurophysiology. |
